Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. Proverbs 23:4
It’s interesting how the two parts of this verse are linked together. Many people will wear themselves out to become rich, thinking that by doing so they are clever and wise. Proverbs tells us that’s it’s not wise at all to wear yourself out because of money. Unfortunately, though, we are bombarded with wealth and riches messages daily.
Marketers scream at us that we’re not satisfied with what we have. Their push is for us to agree with them and buy more products from them. One of their jobs is to make us dissatisfied so that we can buy their products to add to what we already have. Even if we ignore their message today, it’ll probably be there tomorrow stronger and louder.
This verse is still another reminder to us that wealth really isn’t all that. The question for each us remains: what will we do with this wisdom?
