31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.”
33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.
34 Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” Mark 3:31-34
Jesus’ family is those who do God’s will. It’s inclusive of men, women, and children.
It probably can’t be emphasized enough about the women being in the family of God because they were not held in high status when He said it. But they were important to the work of Jesus and to the building of the church. They obviously still play a vital role in the Kingdom of God. The fact that Jesus honored women throughout His ministry elevated their significance in society and in the church.
We’ll see this honor more and more as we approach Easter Sunday. We shouldn’t minimize the role men played throughout history, nor should we minimize the role women played.
