Scandal

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) John 4:7-9

What Jesus was doing here was scandalous on several fronts. (1) Only women of ill repute came to the well to draw water in the middle of the day. The other women in town would have nothing to do with her and so any socializing women would normally do was gone. (2) A Jew talking with a Samaritan was also taboo. It just didn’t happen. (3) A righteous man talking with a not so righteous woman was also scandalous.

Fortunately, Jesus Christ knew precisely what he was doing and who he was talking with.

I’ve used this story before and it’s worth repeating. A co-worker’s mother was questioning how God was working and concluded with “I hope He knows what He’s doing.” It’s humorous because it’s so real and what we sometimes think but rarely voice. Of course He knows what He’s doing in the world! As the world gets crazier, it’s very easy to think differently.

Take some time today to reflect on just what God IS doing in the world. Your findings just may surprise you because they are not front and center.
