2 In their own eyes they flatter themselves
too much to detect or hate their sin. Psalm 36:2
It’s fascinating to watch people who think highly of themselves. It’s all about them and their accomplishments. Scripture is telling us in this passage that they are blinded by their own importance! They can’t see past themselves. What a sad world they must live in.
If we’re not careful, we can become like them in much more subtle ways.
For instance:
- When was the last time you did something and didn’t care a bit about who got the credit for it?
- When was the last time you served or helped somebody who could never pay you back?
- When was the last time you just gave money to a cause because you didn’t want money to be a stumbling block in your life?
Yes, these are just examples but they could be pointing to something bigger in our lives.
I recall Christian Music artist Steve Green at the height of his career saying this in concert: “My brother warned me that many have gone further than I have in their faith and still fallen. Don’t think it can’t happen to you just because of who you are.”
