6 Surely the righteous will never be shaken;
they will be remembered forever.
7 They will have no fear of bad news;
their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
8 Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;
in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
9 They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,
their righteousness endures forever;
their horn will be lifted high in honor. Psalm 112:6-9
I read verses like this and wonder if I’m the norm or an exception.
You see, I’m not always steadfast.
I can easily be shaken.
I sometimes fear. Actually, I fear quite a bit.
I get discouraged by my dirty rotten, no-good enemies. Some of my friends discourage me too!
But, on the other hand, I also know where my hope should be placed. I don’t always place it there but I do know where to place it.
I know that God will remember me forever.
I know my righteousness – through the blood of Christ – will endure forever.
David painted a picture of a very optimistic world, a world in which good always overcomes evil and where people float from mountaintop to mountaintop and are unharmed by the world. I just happen to know all too clearly where the valleys are.
Don’t get me wrong though. God is more than sufficient for my needs. He always will be.
And it’s that sufficiency I can rest my head on at the end of every day. The world may hurl its worst against me, but I know where to turn for help.
