54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!” Matthew 27:51-54
So many catastrophic things happened at once that caused the guards to react the way they did. It was too much to be called a coincidence, and it was at that moment they got it. It must have been a powerful moment. Whether or not they believed in this Son of God is a different matter altogether, but they were changed.
Minutes before the earthquake, the curtain being torn, and the graves being opened, these men were mocking the Lord and His methods. Of course they didn’t know who He was but since they had a bit of power, they were in control…or so they thought.
You just never know about a person. One minute you think they hate all things spiritual, and the next, they are asking questions about God.
Never underestimate what God will do in the hearts of people who have been prayed for. Clearly God was moving in the hearts of these hardened soldiers and quite probably because the very Son of God prayed for them.
If you’ve been praying for a person, don’t ever give up just because you’ve not seen God move. That person is on your mind for a reason, and that reason is for you to perhaps be the only person in the world praying for them.
