Testing Unawares

14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

16 “What are you arguing with them about?” he asked. Mark 9:14-16

The remaining nine disciples were holding their own with the teachers of the law. The teachers were stirring up trouble once again no doubt. Even without realizing it, the disciples were growing and maturing in the faith. The teachers would know Scriptures inside and out and would use it to try to trap them as they had done multiple times with Jesus.

The disciples were learning. It was almost as if He had gone onto the mountain with the Three for just this purpose. Later the twelve would have to “compare notes” about what transpired on the mountain and with the teachers. The Three were at a clear disadvantage in such a conversation.

The general point here, though, is that sometimes God will give you situations that test your faith. You don’t think He’s anywhere nearby but you come through at the end wondering why you even doubted. Just as the disciples probably had confidence issues, they were tested without even realizing they were being tested.
