3 The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.
4 The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is majestic.
5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
6 He makes Lebanon leap like a calf,

When I was an aircrew member in the Air Force we flew on highly modified Boeing 707 airframes. The one characteristic the plane had that stood out was that it was extremely LOUD inside when the plane was in the air. There was no insulation like we have on modern aircraft, and communicating to one another was done either by shouting or through the internal communications with headsets. One of my buddies made a comment that has stuck with me all these years. He said, “I hope the Lord doesn’t come when we’re flying inside these things. We won’t be able to hear the trumpet.”

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 1 Thessalonians 4:16

My friends, I am fully confident that when that great trumpet call of God sounds, we will not only hear it but we’ll be rushing to get closer to it.

As David describes in human terms what the “voice of the Lord” is about, there is no mistaking it when we hear it. It can be thunderous, majestic, powerful, striking, and even like that of the “still small voice” (1 Kings 19:11-12).

What do they all have in common? It’s the unmistakable voice of the Lord.

The Voice of the Lord still speaks to us today. It has been said that when you hear it, while it’s not audible, it might as well be because it’s so clear in its message.
