Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Romans 13:1

Misinterpretation of this one verse has caused a lot of grief and grief in the Christian church. Simply put, if the government wants you to do something sinful, you shouldn’t do it (Acts 5:29).

When Paul wrote this, he was living in a dictatorship. What the rules commanded, they demanded obedience. Some of the Roman rulers even demanded that the people bow to them and call them Lord and God. The Christians of that era were right to disobey, and in doing so could have secured their own death warrant.

There are certain times even in our day when the Government might command us to do something and it would be right for us to disobey. For instance, a number of years ago, the military were required to burn Bibles that were brought into Saudi Arabia. I would probably have been a “conscientious objector.”

As the nationwide election draws near, pray that God would have His hand on who is elected throughout the nation.
