The Great Unknowns

Greet Urbanus, our co-worker in Christ, and my dear friend Stachys. Romans 16:9

Paul greets two more unknowns, Urbanus and Stachys. As we read through these lists (as well as other lists and genealogies throughout the Bible), we have to ask an important question: why did God want these authors to write about the unknowns? I think the answer is simpler than we want to make it. Since most of the world will not become a household name, God is acknowledging that these unknowns are significant, and for different reasons.

Just like the soldiers guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier 24/7/365 come rain, shine, or snow, God is watching over us around the clock. The important difference is that God knows our name and everything about us. We are not just a number or a statistic.

As we approach the Christmas season, consider how God is watching over your life. To much of the world, you’re unknown.

To God, you’re the reason Christ descended from heaven.
