The Literal Life of Riley

18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

1 Peter 1:18-21

There’s a lot to unpack in these verses, but Peter is telling those in exile they were more valuable than they know.

For those who are only living for the moment, for wealth, for fame, for their own glory, Peter tells s it’s an empty way of life. Even if they achieved their wildest goals and dreams, then what to they have.

Even the middle class in this society live like the royals did long ago. Running water, electricity, vehicles to get us everywhere, world class food, great housing, few creature comforts that we lack.

And yet, we still strive for more. We still want the next big thing instead of being content and satisfied. Notice I didn’t say they strrive, but we do.

That’s when we have to step back and just appreciate the things we have and who we enjoy them with. Fortunately, this life is not the end of things. Our hope is in God and in an “afterlife” that will outdoubtedly put this one to shame.

Lean in to Him every day.
