15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. Genesis 4:15-16
I first read this and couldn’t believe God’s mercy for Cain.
But there’s a line in here that is more significant than we know: “So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence.” Yes, Cain had a mark on him to protect him, but he was no longer living in God’s presence. What makes that significant is that there were only 3 people in the entire world living at this time, and one of them is no longer in God’s presence!
That’s one of the things that will make hell so bad, absence of the presence of God, that is, in addition to burning fire.
I think we totally underestimate and take for granted the presence of God in the world. Remove God and the presence of God (in His people), and you will see true darkness.
Thank God for the presence of God in the world. Thank Him every day for it.
