The Virgin Birth

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). Matthew 1:22-23

The television talk show host Larry King, a Jewish man, has famously said that his main stumbling block to Christianity is the virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14) .

It certainly is a troubling event on the face of it. It’s a paradox, that is, if you eliminate God from the mix, which of course you can’t do. Apart from God, the virgin birth of Jesus could not have happened. It’s physically impossible. I definitely don’t understand it, but I believe it.

Isaiah the prophet foretold the virgin birth. Did he have any idea what he was saying when he said it? Did he know the impossibility of that kind of a birth? It didn’t matter because he was told to say it. Prophets seemed to be the kind of people without verbal filters. They said what they said and there was no taking it back!

Seven hundred years after Isaiah predicted this, it was fulfilled in the birth of a boy born to a virgin. We don’t fully understand it, but we do believe it.

Help us, Lord Jesus to believe it all the more as your day of appearing nears.
