He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
“I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.” John 4:16-18
Like no one else could do, Jesus peered straight through this woman to get to the truth. He knew the truth; He merely wanted her to admit it. It seemed like a strange question at the time but he was trying to identify her needs. He wasn’t there to condemn or to shame her, but to encourage her towards the truth.
It could have been the woman at the well that he questioned or it could have been any of us. You see, He knows us better than we know ourselves. He knows the needs and the wants and the desires we have. He knows what we’re hiding and afraid to admit.
Perhaps there are areas you’re afraid to admit to others. It’s not hidden from Him. He came to her so He could help her. We have the distinct advantage of being able to come to Him for help.
