6 Praise be to the Lord, who has not let us be torn by their teeth.
7 We have escaped like a bird from the fowler’s snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped.
8 Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 124:6-8
I’ve written about Dan Baumann before because the story he told about his newfound freedom after being in an Iranian prison is just so rewarding. And he’s still alive to talk about it.
Dan had spent three long months inside an Iranian prison. At the time the U.S. did not have good relations with Iran, but he was fortunate enough to have a Swiss passport. The Swiss negotiated his release. He had his first meal after being released in the Swiss Ambassador’s home. Dan sat at the table and saw all the food, and looked at his place settings. There were several sets of silverware on either side of his plate. Westerners reading this will recognize immediately that the extra silverware is for additional courses. Dan was stunned. The ambassador asked him what was wrong. Dan, like many of us, was not accustomed to such formality, and he had just spent a lot of time in an Iranian prison. He was overwhelmed.
Dan said, “I’m sorry. I’m just not used to this. I don’t know which utensil to use.”
The ambassador smiled and said, “Whichever you like, Dan. You’re a free man.”
Free. He was a free man. He was no longer captive and being tortured. He was free.
Perhaps you’re overwhelmed with life, even as a Believer.
Perhaps, as the Psalmist wrote, you feel trapped where you are.
Perhaps you are trapped in sin that no one knows about and you would be devastated if others found out.
The Lord wants to free you from those worries and sins! He wants desperately to set you free.
Let him. You have to trust Him.
Run – don’t walk – to Him. Throw your burdens at His feet and run to Him. Be set free today. There’s nothing stopping you.
