It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun stopped shining. Luke 23:44
For the next few days, I will be writing about the events surrounding the Death, Burial, and Resurrection of Jesus.
For three hours in the middle of the day, the sun stopped shining. This must have really puzzled those who didn’t know what had happened on the cross. Think about those near the cross. I would think that most put two and two together. You can almost hear the gulp in their throats. What had they done with this man hanging there? They were so close to the Light of Lights and yet darkness overtook them. There is great irony in that.
There are people all around us who are in darkness. Deep darkness. And yet we continue to shine our lights. Some may be dim and flickering; some may have a lighthouse quality beam but still we shine one. Today as you consider the three hours of darkness when Jesus hung on the cross, consider those who you know who are still in darkness. Pray for them. Pray that the Light of the World will shine into their lives.
