In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.
May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,
even as we put our hope in you. Psalm 33:21-22
Friends of our had the same last name of a prominent Congressman in the region. Though there was no relation, whenever he mentioned his last name, local government officials and those familiar with the Congressman would go overboard to cater to my friends. Why? They believed that if they were relatives and things didn’t go well, it would get back to the Congressman and it could come back to “bite” the local officials.
We name drop all the time. Why? Because we want people to know we’ve met, associated with, or was friends with someone important and famous.
There is one name we will “drop” and it will usher us into Heaven. That name is Jesus. So when the Psalmist writes that we trust in His holy name we understand that the name in this instance is the only one that matters. If we were to trust in a politician, musician, actor, or wealthy person, it wouldn’t do a thing for us On That Day.
I say that to remind us that this life is temporary and decaying. We trust in His holy name not because we want to be ushered into great things on this earth, but as a simple act of faith each and every day.
