8 Come and see what the Lord has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire. Psalm 46:8-9
These are troubling verses because we have a certain view of God and this isn’t one of them. We don’t like to admit that God can cause desolations on the earth at His will, and in how He chooses. But He does.
The flip side of that, of course, is that at any given moment He makes wars cease. Just like that.
The obvious question raised by all of this is, “why?”
I don’t know. I know that answer doesn’t satisfy most but we clearly don’t have the “big picture” of history and events. Why He doesn’t end all war and striving is beyond our finite comprehension. When evil people perpetrate evil against innocents we wonder where God is in the matter.
I wish I had the answers to these troubling questions, but I don’t. I do know that I can trust God because He’s been faithful throughout the years for me. I can’t trust men to do the right thing 100% of the time (or even 50% of the time for that matter), but I can trust God to do it.
