Wisdom From Above

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. James 1:5

It seems each passing day we need a new helping of wisdom. There are just so many falsehoods and lies floating around this world, it’s hard to keep track of them all. You can’t trust the news the Government, social media, the education system, the medical community, the research and development community (full disclosure: I work for a large non-profit R&D company), or our local leaders. You have to weigh everything they say against what they do personally.

The 1960s had a strong streak of Question Authority protests and marches. They had the right idea.

The Bible does tell us something similar when it comes to the Bible itself, “The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. Acts 17:10-11. If a Bible teacher said something, the Bereans did the fact checking of what was said against the Old Testament.

In these interesting times we live in, we need wisdom more than ever. Of course we need to fact check everything against everything that is available. That’s hard to do when the powerful media companies ban rational dissent and opinions.

Still, we need to pray for wisdom is so many other areas: family, society, church, and authorities.

Entire chapters in Proverbs were written to teach us about wisdom. We would do well to reread them and meditate on them often. And then we pray for the wisdom because we desperately need it.
