For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
Have you ever stopped to consider why Jesus the Son was called Wonderful Counselor? It almost doesn’t fit in with the other descriptors: mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Entire books have been written about this very title given to this Newborn so let me suggest some very simple reasons.
- A wonderful counselor is one who knows what we are going through, can empathize with our struggles, and yet has the power to overcome them. Then He has the authority to counsel us.
- A wonderful counselor is able to prescribe something for our lostness. In fact, He is the prescription.
- A wonderful counselor is available.
I’ve used this passage many times before but here it is again: “come close to God and He will come close to you.” James 4:8
This is the season to do that very thing.
