Word Reserved for God

2 For the Lord Most High is awesome,
the great King over all the earth. Psalm 47:2

Long ago I learned never to use the word awesome unless it was in reference to God. Why? Well, partly it’s a personal preference. Since it’s a word that means “full of awe” (not to be confused at all with awful), it’s only right to be used of a person who is, well, full of awe! To use it on anyone or anything less degrades the term for me.

For instance:

  • your child brings a great report card home, “awesome!”
  • your spouse saves money on clothing, “awesome!”
  • your co-worker nails a presentation, “awesome!”
  • the government cuts taxes by 20%, “awesome” and “say what???” 🙂

You get the idea. They just do not carry the same connotation as “the Creator of the Universe delights in me. He is the Great King over all the Earth!”
