Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken. John 2:19-22
Thus Jesus began to speak in metaphorical terms. Some would “get it.” Others – many others – would not. Scripture points this often (Mark 4:12, Isaiah 6:9, Acts 28:26)
John is even telling us once again that His disciples would recall what he had just said to the Jews, because after all, His resurrection is a critical aspect of his existence on earth! I cannot emphasize enough the importance of Scripture memorization. God can use it at any time and many different ways. There really are no downsides to memorizing portions of the Bible.
